kAISER vALAIS eMBRYO oRIGINS AND GENETIC ADVANCEMENTS

EMBRYO SOURCE

Our breeding program is founded on imported Valais Blacknose embryos sourced through Steve Jones, a respected figure within the international Valais Blacknose community. Steve has played a key role in coordinating the export of high-quality Valais genetics for breeders outside of Switzerland, including established programs in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.

We chose to build our foundation flock through this embryo program to ensure access to genetics that closely reflect traditional Swiss Valais breed type, correct markings, sound structure, and reliable temperament. This approach allowed us to begin with carefully selected bloodlines while maintaining strict biosecurity and long-term genetic planning.

rECIPIENT EWES

The Rideau Arcott ewes used as the recipient mothers for our imported Valais Blacknose embryos were sourced from Kaiser Ag Solutions, a respected family-run agricultural enterprise with a long-standing commitment to high-health sheep management and strict biosecurity practices. The Kaiser Ag flock is completely closed, meaning no animal ever returns to the farm once it leaves, and high health standards are maintained through careful management and entry protocols.

Kaiser Ag’s Rideau Arcott sheep are known for their sound structure, maternal strength, and consistent temperament, making them ideal recipient ewes for embryo transfer and a strong foundation for raising healthy Valais Blacknose lambs on Canadian soil. Their focus on biosecurity and flock integrity complements our own breeding philosophy, ensuring that every lamb born from embryo transfer is raised on a robust and well-managed dam.

Advanced Reproductive Support — OC Flock Management

We are fortunate to work with Dr. Lynn Tait, DVM, of OC Flock Management Inc., who has guided us through every step of our embryo transfer and reproductive planning. OC Flock Management specializes in advanced reproductive technologies for sheep and goats, including laparoscopic artificial insemination, embryo collection, and embryo transfer, supported by a CFIA-approved semen and embryo collection facility.

Dr. Tait brings decades of experience in small ruminant veterinary practice and reproductive physiology, and her work with elite Canadian genetics — including internationally export-approved semen and embryo production — has positioned OC Flock Management as one of a very small number of facilities worldwide with EU-approved export capability.

We chose to work with Dr. Tait because of her deep expertise, hands-on support, and commitment to health, welfare, and sound genetics. Her guidance ensured the embryo transfer process was executed with precision and care, and her continued collaboration gives us confidence in both our current foundation stock and our future genetic planning

oUR BEGININGS

Kaiser Valais began with the arrival of our recipient ewes in the summer of 2023. That fall, in October 2023, frozen embryos were successfully implanted, marking the true start of our Valais Blacknose program. Our first lambing season followed in March of 2024, when we welcomed our initial group of lambs. From that first transfer, we were fortunate to have five healthy lambs born—two ewes and three rams—establishing the foundation of Kaiser Valais and setting the stage for the growth of our flock

Breed Standards and Selection Criteria.

Kaiser Valais is dedicated to breeding sheep that align closely with recognized Valais Blacknose breed standards. Our genetics are intentionally selected using these standards as our framework—guiding breeding decisions as our program develops, with a focus on breed character, functional correctness, and long-term consistency.

In Valais Blacknose grading and show systems, sheep are assessed using a points-based approach, with deductions made when an animal falls short of the standard. Evaluation commonly considers overall appearance, conformation/structure (including how the animal stands and moves), and wool/fleece quality, along with specific checks such as mouth/teeth and other key breed requirements. At Kaiser Valais, we use this same criteria-driven mindset to guide selection—continually looking for high-mark sheep and exceptional bloodlines, whether through natural breeding, semen acquisition, or embryo transfer, to strengthen and advance our program.

Key Evaluation Traits

The following traits form the foundation of how we evaluate, retain, and place sheep within our program.

Our Breeding Plan.

Spring 2026 Lambs

Spring 2026 marked an exciting milestone for Kaiser Valais, including the first lamb from our registered full-blood Valais Blacknose ewe, April. Her beautifully marked ewe lamb, Pandora, represents an important step forward in the continued development of our breeding program.

This spring also brought a strong group of well-marked F1 Valais cross lambs from our Rideau recipient ewes, several of which are available for sale.

Lambs are evaluated carefully for structure, markings, temperament, and overall breed quality before retention or placement decisions are made.

Fall 2026 Breeding Plan

Fall 2026, we are introducing additional Valais Blacknose bloodlines through imported embryos and semen selected from new genetics. These pairings are intended to support greater genetic diversity while maintaining the structure, markings, temperament, and overall character we prioritize within our flock.

Spring 2027 lambing is expected to include full-blood registered Valais, beautiful F2 Valais lambs, alongside a limited number of select F1 lambs as our breeding program continues to expand.

Our Valais Blacknose sheep are registered with the CLRC (Canadian Livestock Records Corporation). Registration numbers are available upon request and can be independently verified through the CLRC website. https://www.clrc.ca/search-registry/member-details/5441363
